V.T.C.T Sports Massage: This course is based on national occupational standards and is endorsed by The Sports Massage Association (SMA), successful candidate may apply to become Level 4 affiliate SMA members. The course cost also includes the membership fee for the SMA.

Aims of Course: To provide knowledge & understanding of anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to sports massage and provide an understanding of muscular- skeletal injuries and common conditions which athletes may have. This course will provide candidates with palpation skills and to analyze posture and range of movement.

It is suitable for those who work in the sports and leisure industry, and existing therapists including physiotherapists, physiotherapists, sports therapists/ sports massage practitioners , and massage therapists who wish to learn new skills for treating clients with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of movement.

COURSE CONTENT: Relevant consultation, contra-indications to sports massage, postural analysis, pre & post event massage. Advanced Massage Techniques for Specific Conditions: Neuromuscular Technique, Strain Counter Strain, Trigger Points, Soft Tissue Release.

MASSAGE TECHNIQUES: Effleurage, Petrissage Group, Palmer Kneading, Digital and Thumb Kneading, Wringing, Picking Up, Skin Rolling, Frictions, Knuckling, Fists & Elbow,Tapotement.

AIDS TO MASSAGE: Audio Sonic machine, Infra Red Lamp, Paraffin Wax Heat Treatment. The ability to recognising posture deformities. Remedial therapy for conditions of the Foot, Ankle, Knee, Leg, Torso, Neck, Hand, Elbow, Shoulder, joint & muscle function. Anatomy & physiology & working practice within sports club.

AFTER-CARE: common remedial conditions and working practice within sports environment. Stretches and strengthening exercises, mobility & co-ordination exercises.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
ALL candidates in advance of the course start dates, will be requested to complete Anatomy & Physiology assignment paper, which includes essential Anatomy & Physiology knowledge for the Level 4 course entry.

If you are able to evidence that you have covered all or some of this content previously you will be able to receive accredited prior learning (APL), you will have to provide evidence.
New to massage, you will need to do an Introduction to Sports Massage course and the A&P assignment above,

Be a holder of the VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Massage, or equivalent qualification and the A&P assignment above,

A relevant medical or health & fitness/exercise qualification and the A&P assignment above,and A minimum 6 hours recognised qualification in Emergency or First Aid.

DURATION: 10 DAYS or 18 evenings (plus half day assessment final exam)

Taping & Strapping course (for coaches/sports therapists)

This one day course is for Physiotherapists, Doctors, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Sports Massage Practitioners and Sports Therapist.

To enable participants to understand the principles and practice of strapping through properties of different types of tape products, and learn how to competently use different types of tape for support during sports activities and rehabilitation.
By the close of the day, participants will be capable of assessing which tape would be fit for purpose, and safely applying the tape to be fit for purpose. Participants will be able to describe how they would assess and design a functional taping support for a specific sport injury situation.

Contraindications to strapping
Risks of taping in sport
Key terminology used in strapping & taping
Safe and appropriate application of strapping for injury support
Properties of different kinds of tape and their use
How to apply tape so that it stays on
How to apply tape mid sports event
When to apply taping and strapping
Use of taping in prevention of injury
Relative effectiveness of various kinds of tapes, and applications
The course participants will apply the most commonly required strapping for problems with the foot, ankle, knee, elbow, wrist and hand.
You work hands on with tape, and learn tips and hints from a master.
You will learn how to work with spray adhesive, underwrap, cohesive, Elastic Adhesive, Zinc Oxide, and hand tearable Sports Tape
Note this practical day involves working on fellow students.
